Lemon for Hyperpigmentation
Lemon is commonly used as a home remedy for many types of hyperpigmentation, including pigmentation around the mouth, melasma, freckles, age spots and acne scarring. There are several ways to use lemon for hyperpigmentation. To use lemon as a natural hyperpigmentation treatment, lemon juice can be applied directly to the affected area for several minutes each day. Lemon juice can also be combined with other natural ingredients to fade and exfoliate the skin.
The easiest way to use lemon to reduce hyperpigmentation is to apply lemon slices or juice directly to the skin. To apply lemon juice to the skin, soak a cotton ball or small cloth in lemon juice or in a diluted mixture of lemon juice and water. Apply the liquid directly to the hyperpigmented area and hold for anywhere from several minutes to half an hour. Afterward, the remaining liquid can be washed from the skin or left to dry. To protect the skin from becoming overly dry, moisturize immediately after using lemon juice for hyperpigmentation.
If you have sensitive skin, adding a soothing ingredients like honey might make it easier to keep lemon on your skin long enough to be effective.
Notes:
- Do a patch test on an area of skin away from your face, such as the inside of your elbow. Wait for 1 to 2 days to see if any side effects develop before using lemon on your face.
- Squeeze a small amount of juice from a fresh lemon onto a cotton ball. Gently apply to the desired area of skin using gentle pressure (don’t rub).
- Once the lemon juice dries, you can continue with the rest of your skin care routine.
- Discontinue use if you have side effects.
- Apply only on your dark spots, and not on your full face/skin.
- Apply every other night for a month and not everynight
- Apply at night time but not at bed time so that you can monitor your skin
- Citrus fruits applied topically can also increase your risk of sunburn. Never apply lemon before going outside in direct sunlight, and don’t use it for several days before any planned outdoor activities.
